The first question almost everyone asks about moving to Spain is what it costs per month. The short answer is that it depends on the city — and the gap between cities is wide enough to change the whole decision. A budget that feels tight in Madrid is comfortable in Valencia and generous in a mid-size town.
Rent: the biggest line
Rent typically takes 40–55% of a newly arrived family's monthly budget. Average rent for a one- to two-bedroom flat in 2026:

Two things the table does not show, and that catch people out:
Deposit and guarantee. Landlords usually ask for the legal one-month deposit plus one or two months of additional guarantee, plus the first month's rent. Moving into a €900 flat means having roughly €3,600 in cash ready.
Payslips. Most landlords want a Spanish employment contract or three recent payslips. A newcomer without a Spanish work history often has to prepay several months or provide a Spanish guarantor. This is why the first month is by far the heaviest on cash flow.
Everything else
Unlike rent, these barely vary between cities:
- Groceries: €230–€400 a month for one person
- Utilities (electricity, gas, water, internet and mobile combined): €140–€230
- Monthly transport pass: around €55 in Madrid, €40 in Barcelona
- Running a car (fuel, insurance, maintenance, parking): €400–€600 a month
That last line matters. In most Spanish cities a car is optional, and going without frees up roughly half the rent of a Valencia flat.
So what do you need per month?
Net monthly income for one person living comfortably, including about 10% savings:

For a family, multiply by 1.6 (a couple) up to 2.5 (a couple with children).
How this connects to your residence file
Directly — and this is the part people miss. Spain's immigration thresholds are set nationally and have nothing to do with what your city costs:
- Non-lucrative residence: €28,800 a year for the main applicant plus €7,200 per dependent — €2,400 a month for one person.
- Digital nomad visa: around €2,849 a month (200% of the minimum wage).
So the city changes your quality of life, not the threshold you must prove. On the same income, Seville or Castellón buys a far more comfortable life than Madrid.
The minimum wage as a yardstick
Spain's statutory minimum wage (SMI) in 2026 is €1,221 a month across 14 payments — €17,094 a year, or €1,424.50 spread over 12 months. Minimum-wage income is exempt from income tax but carries a 6.5% social security deduction, leaving roughly €1,142 net.
Keep that number in mind: a minimum-wage job does not support independent living in Madrid, but very nearly does in a mid-size city.
What people forget to budget
- Private health insurance: required for most visas; €50–€200 a month depending on age.
- Sworn translations and apostilles: a one-off but significant cost, before you travel.
- The first month: deposit, guarantee, furnishing and admin usually exceed two months' rent.
- Money transfer costs: depending on the route you use to move capital, a meaningful percentage can disappear. Check this in advance.
In short
On a limited budget, Madrid and Barcelona are hard choices. Valencia, Málaga, Seville and mid-size cities like Castellón deliver a comparable quality of life for 30–40% less — under exactly the same immigration thresholds.
