Learning Spanish — To the Level Your File and Your Job Actually Need

Language is the one part of this whole process that no lawyer or adviser can do for you. Which is exactly why it is the best thing to start today — before any document, before any appointment.

Which level, for what

That third row matters most. B1 is the employability line. At A2 you can live; at B1 you get through interviews.

Do not confuse the exams

Three similar-sounding names with quite different purposes:

DELE — the official, permanent diploma from Spain's Ministry of Education. It never expires. This is what citizenship requires, at A2 level, and it costs around €138 in 2026. It runs on fixed dates and you must register in advance.

SIELE — an electronic exam, faster and more flexible, but the result is valid for five years. Good for universities and employers; not accepted for citizenship.

CCSE — not a language exam at all. It tests knowledge of the Spanish constitution and culture, costs around €85, and is compulsory for every citizenship applicant — even if your Spanish is excellent.

So for citizenship you need both: CCSE + DELE A2. Only nationals of Spanish-speaking countries are exempt from the DELE.

How long does it take?

Assuming two or three classes a week plus your own practice:

So roughly a year from zero to B1 with steady practice. Start now and, by the time your file is ready and your visa issued, you are close to B1 — meaning the job market is open to you from the day you arrive rather than a year later.

How to start before you move

• Classes with a teacher, in person or online — the most effective, especially for speaking
• Apps — good for vocabulary and daily consistency, but they will not get you to B1 alone
• Podcasts and series with Spanish subtitles — the best way to train your ear
• A private online tutor — more expensive but the fastest route to speaking

One thing that makes a real difference: learn European Spanish, not Latin American Spanish. The pronunciation and some vocabulary differ noticeably, and it matters in the DELE and in interviews.

Regional languages: the surprise

In Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearics, Galicia and the Basque Country there are two official languages. State schools teach part of the curriculum in the regional language, and some public sector jobs require it.

This matters when choosing a city. If you have school-age children and would rather they not learn two new languages at once, Madrid, Andalusia (Seville, Málaga) or Murcia are simpler. Valencia and Catalonia are perfectly workable too — children usually adapt faster than adults.

And if you have no time?

Some routes require no language at all. The non-lucrative permit and the digital nomad visa have no language condition, because you are not competing in the Spanish labour market.

Even so, daily life without the language is hard — and if you ever go for citizenship, the A2 exam is still waiting.
