Whether you can work in Spain depends on one thing: which permit you hold. Some visas allow work, some explicitly forbid it, and working without authorisation damages your residence file and exposes your employer to heavy fines.
Salaries: the starting point
Spain's statutory minimum wage (SMI) in 2026:
- €1,221 a month across 14 payments
- Equivalent to €1,424.50 if spread over 12 months
- €17,094 a year, or €8.90 an hour
Minimum-wage income is exempt from income tax (IRPF) but carries a 6.5% social security deduction, leaving roughly €1,142 net a month.
One thing to know when comparing offers: Spanish salaries are quoted as gross annual figures, not monthly. A job advertised at "€30,000" means gross per year; net is roughly €1,900–€2,100 a month depending on your family situation and region. Always calculate the net before accepting.
Employee or autónomo?
Employee (por cuenta ajena) — your employer registers you with social security and pays most of the contribution. You get unemployment cover, paid leave and statutory protection.
Self-employed (autónomo) — you register yourself and pay a monthly social security contribution based on declared income, plus quarterly tax and VAT returns. More freedom, more risk and more paperwork.

Take that first row seriously. Non-lucrative means zero work — including remote work for a foreign company. Many people assume that income from abroad is fine. It is not, and it can cost you the renewal. If you intend to work, choose the right route from the start.
Where the demand actually is
Spanish unemployment sits above the European average, but that headline hides real and persistent demand in several areas:
- Technology: software development, data, cybersecurity
- Healthcare: nursing and elderly care, with serious shortages
- Hospitality and tourism: seasonal but large, especially on the coast
- Skilled trades: electricians, plumbers, welders, technicians
- Logistics and transport: professional drivers in particular
Two real obstacles:
Language. Outside tech in Madrid and Barcelona, Spanish is a practical requirement. B1 is the realistic hiring threshold. If you are still abroad, this is the single best investment you can start today.
Qualification recognition. For regulated professions — medicine, nursing, engineering, teaching, law — you cannot work without homologación. It takes months and should start before you travel.
Things people are not told
- Temporary contracts are common. Many first jobs are temporary. A permanent contract is far easier to use for renting a flat and renewing a permit.
- Foreign experience does not always transfer. Spanish employers usually want local track record. The first job is often below your level; that is normal and temporary.
- Networks beat CVs. A large share of hiring happens through referral rather than adverts.
- If you are an entrepreneur, you may not need an employer. For someone with capital and a track record, the self-employment visa or company formation is often faster than finding a company willing to sponsor.
