The Spanish passport is one of the strongest in the world. For Iranian applicants the route is long, but it works — provided the count is done correctly from the first year.
Read this before you decide
The most damaging mistake we see: someone lives in Spain for ten years and then discovers one of those years does not count as legal residence, because of a gap between permits or a period on a student visa. Those years do not come back. Your residence timeline has to be tracked from today, not audited in year ten.
What you should know
- The general rule is ten years of continuous legal residence — this is the route for Iranian applicants.
- Two years for nationals of Latin American countries, Portugal, the Philippines, Andorra and Equatorial Guinea, and for Sephardic Jews; one year for the spouse of a Spanish citizen; five for refugees.
- The CCSE exam on the constitution and Spanish culture costs €85 and is required of everyone.
- DELE A2 costs €138 and is required unless you are a national of a Spanish-speaking country.
- The government fee is €104.05. The statutory deadline is a year; in practice 12–24 months — over 256,000 files were pending at the end of 2025.
