Get a Spanish residence card
Spain's new immigration regulation has applied since May 2025 and has made regularising from inside the country noticeably easier. Many people who assume they have no route already qualify and do not know it.

But timing is everything. Arraigo is counted from your documented presence: if your empadronamiento or work records have gaps, the months you actually spent in Spain simply do not count. Filing too early or too late both end in refusal.
What you should know
- The minimum residence period for arraigo dropped from three years to two — which means many people qualify today.
- Five arraigo routes: social, laboral, formativo, segunda oportunidad and familiar. Picking the right one is the difference between approval and refusal.
- Family reunification: the age limit for sponsored children rose from 21 to 26, and unmarried partners now qualify.
- Sponsor income requirements were relaxed and many applications can be filed from inside Spain, without going home first.
- After five continuous years of legal residence you can apply for long-term residency.
